Calvin (or should I say Dr. Calvin Otieno Nyapete :) :) ) was born in Kakrao village in Western Kenya, to Mr. Malaki Oloo (a primary school teacher) and Mrs. Jane Awino (a peasant farmer). He is the 3rd born in a house of 8 kids. He also has 5 other step siblings. He attended Kanyawanga High School in Rongo, Kenya between 2002 to 2005. It was during his time at Kanyawanga that he crossed paths with Ashley, Fred, Milton and the LCA community. Fred and Milton’s dad was his high school chemistry teacher. It also happened he was one of his favorite students. Meeting the Lwala brothers came at an unfortunate time. They had just lost their mother. However, he had met their sister (Florence) and cousin (Damianus who also attended Kanyawanga) but he had no idea they had family members in the United States.
It was after the Ochieng brothers had flown back to the US that Calvin started to inquire more about US colleges and universities from their father. He learned about the college tests requirements (SAT general, SAT subject and TOEFL). At that time ACT was not being offered in Kenya. A year later, the Ochiengs lost their father which meant Calvin lost his chemistry teacher too. This was their senior year in high school. They had to spend rest of the year covering the remainder of the syllabus by themselves. The little information he had received from his teacher marked a major foundation in pursuing education abroad in the years to come. He had the chance to meet wonderful students from Dartmouth College and Vanderbilt University who assisted with paying for college tests, providing SAT books, editing and revising personal statements, mailing college applications etc.
After completing high school, he worked on contract basis for an NGO called C-MAD Kenya between 2006 to 2007 before joining Moi University to pursue a B.A in Geography and Economics (2007-2009). He had become close friends with the Ochiengs. He traveled hours from his village by matatus and walked down the long kilometers of dirt road and paths to visit Lwala. He stayed for days, worked with the volunteer college students and kept coming back. Meeting Milton, Fred, and cheerful industry of Dartmouth College student volunteers was inspirational. One of these students (Ms. Ashley Carruth) basically became a person he considers sister from another mother and father. He considers her family.
Anyway, Calvin subsequently transferred to Principia College, Elsah IL in the fall of 2009 where he completed a B.S in Chemistry (with Honors) with double minors in Mathematics and Sociology/Anthropology in 2013. After Principia College, Calvin joined St. Louis University, Department of Chemistry, in the summer of 2013 for graduate school. He earned his M.S and Doctoral/PhD degrees in the spring of 2014 and 2018 respectively. His background is in organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry and nano-materials. He is currently working as a Senior Scientist at MilliporeSigma - the Life Science business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany. He offers technical advise to strategic customers, management and internal personnel for the companies Advanced Analytical & Chemistry division.
