Watch the following 5 short video clips on African History. The total amount of viewing time is 39 minutes: A Brief Foray into African History BEFORE Imperialism
As you watch them, jot down your thoughts on how these videos might help inform our understanding of African imperialism of past and present. In general, why is this type of historical knowledge important to know today? For this class? Beyond this class?
The first four video clips are excerpts from a PBS series entitled, “Africa’s Great Civilizations”. There is more context on each of those episodes below. The 5th video is a “Crash Course in History” lesson by John Greene.
Discuss to what extent we think norms engineering is ethical
- Formulate an opinion on whether or not norms engineering is ethical
- Critically analyze the seminar texts for underlying values, ideologies and approaches to foreign aid and cultural progress
- Begin to consider how historical, political and/or social events affect the efficacy of aid today.
- Develop a sense of the depth of content we need to study in order to develop a more informed perspective to the debate on foreign aid.
- INTERTEXTUALITY: Be able to make comparisons between the various sources on common themes, similarities and differences in arguments.

- Review the seminar questions and identify a few you want to ask/discuss, including your own.
Norms Engineering Seminar
- Start with a summary of all three sources and clarify any confusions
- Break down the article about Foreign Aid section by section
- Share out the line/idea you picked for your starter
- Go through questions you are most interested, but let's make sure we address the EQ's
