- Get a sense of the major course themes that we'll study.
- Explore various arguments for and against foreign aid and begin to understand how the legacy of imperialism impacts that debate
- Formulate your own initial opinions on the ethics of foreign aid so that we can see to what extent your ideas evolve over the course of this semester!
Reminders
- Links to readings can be found on the course calendar located on the "Resources" tab of my DP
- Let's check out that tab for other rad resources I'd encourage you to dive into.
- Please speak out if you feel like there is content you feel like we're not covering and or that you are interested in! I'm happy to modify the course to enable you all to scratch your intellectual itches as relevant to the overall course goals.
“White Man’s Burden” by Rudyard Kipling and “How to Write About Africa” discussion
- We'll go line by line to analyze Kipling's super racist poem
- Then we'll move onto "How to Write About Africa" by A Kenyan author 100 years later, startign with the question: What line best captures the tone of the author in “How to Write About Africa”? Quickly skim your reading/notes.
Watch the short video on the Berlin Conference that was in our powerpoint from Tuesday
Listen to Legacy of Imperialism Today NPR radio clip
- What is a major takeaway from this interview for you?
- What questions does it raise or what prior-held ideas of yours did it challenge?
Read and discuss “Should America Keep Giving Billions of Dollars to Countries in Need?”
- What are the major arguments for and against aid put forth in this article?
- What seems to be the underlying values/beliefs/ideologies of the arguments (pick ONE argument to identify and respond to)
- What is your opinion, right now? Is foreign aid good or bad?
Food for thought
- What do you really need to know to be able to develop a more informed perspective on the justification and efficacy of foreign aid?
- Do you think a reality tv show could change culture? Behaviors or beliefs? What do you think about using media to spread western values? The podcast assignment for Friday is about a reality tv show a la American idol backed by the UN to combat Islamic extremism in Somalia.
